The Home Collection from Ferm Living

August 22, 2017

The Home Collection from Ferm Living | These Four Walls blog

We’re getting towards the end of August, which means homeware brands are beginning to release details of their autumn-winter 2017 ranges. I’ll be sharing some of my favourites over the next few weeks, starting with the ‘Home Collection’ from Danish company Ferm Living.

Named after Ferm Living’s new Copenhagen showroom, ‘The Home’, which opened its doors last week, the collection combines clean graphic lines and geometric shapes with striking autumnal shades such as deep forest green, soft pink, earthy terracotta and rust-red. There are touches of decadence, too: brass accessories, marble surfaces, tactile velvet cushions, and even a new series of velour poufs in a range of opulent colours and shapes.

Stand-out pieces for me include the ‘Opal’ pendant shades, which put a contemporary spin on traditional white opaque glass (first used in Venice in the 16th century), and an updated version of Ferm Living’s popular kelim rug called ‘Borders’, with blocks of beautiful burnt hues. There are also new rose-pink and dark green colourways for the brand’s iconic rectangular plant box, as well as a smaller, stand-less version which can be placed on kitchen counters or windowsills.

The collection includes lots of eye-catching accessories, too. I love the elegant ‘Poise’ hand mirror, which comes in brass and black, and the playful ‘Spin’ jar, whose grooved surface and tapered shape were inspired by a child’s spinning top. Just as beautiful is the ‘Sekki’ range of pots, bowls and cups, whose coarse clay surfaces and earthy colours evoke ancient manufacturing techniques; and a series of brass and cast-iron wall hooks – some with marble and lapis-lazuli insets – that are designed to provide embellishment as well as practical storage.

Other brand-new designs include the ‘Haze’ lantern and floating shelves, which bring wired glass (normally associated with industrial settings) into the home, and the ‘Loop’ cushion, which uses loop-weaving techniques to create a 3D effect from itch-free New Zealand wool.

My overall favourites, though, are the candleholders. ‘Balance’ is made of two parts that each act as a counterweight to the other, while ‘Around’ is a modern interpretation of the traditional chamberstick. There are also sculptural oval and circular tealight holders that can be hung from windows, doorways and ceilings to brighten up dark winter nights.

I missed the opening event for this last year, so it was great to finally have a look around in person. The light is stunning, as is GUBI's selection of contemporary and classic designs - including the sculptural and futuristic F300 lounge chair, first designed by Pierre Paulin in the 1960s and recently relaunched.

Which room or corner is your favourite...?

Eight years ago today. Carousel posts didn't exist Eight years ago today. Carousel posts didn't exist then so I'm using our anniversary as an excuse to share some of my favourite wedding photos.

I have so many happy memories from the day, but what I remember the most is all the laughter. And the funniest best men's (Chris had four!) speech I've ever heard. I wish we'd had a videographer just to capture that.

Anyway, thanks @small_round_things for the last eight years - and for the 13 before we actually got around to tying the knot!

I now have this design in three different colourways around the house, and this is definitely my favourite to date!
