ALIUM – a brand-new Copenhagen gallery

April 1, 2020

ALIUM - a brand-new Copenhagen gallery | These Four Walls blog

Travel might be out of the question for most of us at the moment, but today I want to share some inspiration for when we can start exploring again – a brand-new Copenhagen gallery that blurs the lines between art, design and interiors.

Called ALIUM, it’s located in a historic building next to Frederiksberg town hall and was the brainchild of Thomas Nissen, founder of online print shop The Poster Club. The name comes from the Latin word for ‘different’ or ‘unlike others’ and reflects the fundamental concept behind the project. Thomas saw an opportunity to present art in a more inspiring and approachable way and set about creating a multi-dimensional experience that goes far beyond the visual. The resulting space breaks down the barriers between art and home living, delving deeper in the narratives behind the pieces on display and encouraging visitors to linger and relax.

ALIUM represents both established and up-and-coming artists from across Scandinavia, and the current selection includes original works by Anne Nowak, Amanda Betz, Carsten Beck, Annette Hallbäck, Linda Weimann, Noa Noon Gammelgaard, Sofia Tufvasson, Rebecca Hein and Malene Birger. There’s also a permanent collection called ALIUM Archive, which consists of 10 open-edition prints created exclusively for the gallery and available from €79.

The space itself is beautiful, with a focus on simple shapes, quality materials and Copenhagen-based designers. There are geometric chairs and tables from Frama, sculptural lighting by 101 Copenhagen, and a Menu ‘Offset’ sofa where you can sit back and unwind. It’s homely and very calming – certainly a far cry from the sterile, pretentious and uninviting atmosphere of many other galleries.

ALIUM is open by appointment, and there are plans for a series of temporary exhibitions and pop-up events starting later in the year. I can’t wait to have a look around when I’m next in Copenhagen, but if you can’t get there in person many of the artworks are available to buy online, too.

A few snaps from the gorgeous @gubiofficial showro A few snaps from the gorgeous @gubiofficial showroom in London, which I visited during @clerkenwelldesignweek earlier this week. I missed the opening event for this last year, so it was great to finally have a look around in person. The light is stunning, as is GUBI's selection of contemporary and classic designs - including the sculptural and futuristic F300 lounge chair, first designed by Pierre Paulin in the 1960s and recently relaunched.

Which room or corner is your favourite...?

Eight years ago today. Carousel posts didn't exist Eight years ago today. Carousel posts didn't exist then so I'm using our anniversary as an excuse to share some of my favourite wedding photos.

I have so many happy memories from the day, but what I remember the most is all the laughter. And the funniest best men's (Chris had four!) speech I've ever heard. I wish we'd had a videographer just to capture that.

Anyway, thanks @small_round_things for the last eight years - and for the 13 before we actually got around to tying the knot!

I now have this design in three different colourways around the house, and this is definitely my favourite to date!
